The Forest is the largest R.S.P.B. reserve in Britain extending from the river Spey to the Cairngorm Mountains
It is one of the remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest that once covered most of the Highlands of Scotland, and is host to various birds and other wild-life including caperchaillie, crested tits, roe deer and red squirrels.
We provide information and maps of footpaths that lead directly into the forest and on to Loch Garten.
You can easily spend several days exploring the woods and heritage of Abernethy, or merely relaxing in a deck chair in the grounds at Dell of Abernethy and by the shores of Loch Garten near the Osprey hide.

However, Glenmore, Glen Feshie, Rothiemurchus, Craigellachie and the Findhorn valley are also areas in this part of the highlands of interest to walkers and bird-watchers. "Best Birdwatching sites in the Scottish Highlands" by Gordon Hamlet is a book worth buying in advance for birdwatchers visiting this area.
